DM Tool & Plastics – Work Ready Certification & No List of Local Companies that Use it

Before getting to this week’s review let me acknowledge an email sent out by Shawnda Combs announcing a $1 million expansion by DM Tool & Plastics of Lewisburg, Ohio.  There is a Ground breaking planned for September 10 at 10:00 a.m. Her email appears to be a copy of an article in the Dayton Business Journal.

Ms.Combs is to be congratulated for whatever part she played in an effort that by her own claim needed a lot of people and help to succeed.

Best of luck to DM Tools & Plastics and thanks for staying in Preble County.

This is a much needed success for an Economic Development Director that as exhibited in her Economic Development update continues to shoot herself in the foot by her inability master PR on the local level.

As an example she went to the effort and spent time at taxpayer expense to hold a May 17 meeting on economic development in the early morning. The meeting should have been on video and made available to any invited official that could not attend and the public that was not invited.  Ms. Combs update continues the “woe is Shawnda facing an uphill battle” attitude that even with the DM success raises the question for the next commission of looking for someone else.

If you ask me if Ms. Combs knows a good bit about economic development, I have to say yes she does.

If you ask me if she knows how to present it to the public and build a consensus on an issue, I have to answer the record shows she has failed more than succeeded. There is arrogance to some of her past comments and this Economic Development Update continues the misfires of the past.

Chris Day has previously stated that without Goose Creek the county has no need for her. Goose Creek is supposedly a dead project and I know he wants voters to believe him when he makes claims for re-election.

SHAWNDA COMBS – ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

25 Minute mark   Claim of three good state leads. One is an automotive supply company, need 65,000 – 100,000 sq. ft. of space.

Sounds like only one good lead.

26.5 Minute mark   Retention of Investor Celebration for Partnership on September 21 at Historical Society Amphitheater (mentioned later that over 230 businesses were invited to it).

27.25 Minute mark   Claim of getting close to Work Ready Certification. Claim that more unemployed need to or convinced to take the test.

I have never heard of a list of local companies that accept the "Work Ready Certificate" and that pretty much sums up an ongoing issue of PR incompetence that can be attributed to Ms. Combs. This problem crosses into a number of areas; If she couldn't convince local citizens about Goose Creek then how could she convince the state? if she can't put video of meetings for public officials on the Internet that can viewed by those unable to attend then is the meeting more about educating them and the public or Shawnda building a resume? People who are unemployed have a lot on their minds and taking a test would stand a better chance if a public list of companies that accept the Work Ready Certificate was available. Have any of you seen one? That highlights the problem – incompetence. Provide better a reason for the test than the possibility that some fictional company may move to Preble in the future.

28 Minute mark   Mention of a building for "training" having been "solidified". Claim that Sinclair is handling it.

28.25 Minute mark   Dream it Do It Program – Mike Snell has appointed there new Work Force Development Manager to help.

28.75 Minute mark   Claim of helping a Manufacturing group (DRMA) in Dayton to plan a Manufacturing Day for October 5. RexArc and Silfex mentioned. Henny Penny wanted to know more about it. Shawnda says it is a whole lot of work.

31 Minute mark   Mention of a $6,000 grant that we got for a local company to get research done through Wilmington College.

The instability of the menstrual volume, cycle and blood will be present unica-web.com cheap cialis during erection, thereby curing erectile dysfunction.
31.75 Minute mark   Met with an environmental company representative about brown field assessment for Preble County.

32.5 Minute mark   Met with a consultant about a future development area of the county.

33.5 Minute mark    Mentions inventory of sites maintained by her – claim of it not being an easy feat. 44 buildings and 18 sites. Ohio sites data base.

34 Minute mark  Ground breaking planned for September 10 at 10:00 a.m.

34.5 Minute mark     David Wesler – …we wouldn't be there if it wasn't for you…

Self congratulatory comments passed between David and Shawnda.

35.5 Minute mark    Shawnda – … this is something that goes unacknowledged in this community. The amount of networking that does go n with employers, the amount of time that we are meeting with them. Sounds like Shawnda watched the CFPCTV video of the meet the candidate night.

36.25 Minute mark   Shawnda – we were going to lose them to Montgomery County because Montgomery County has an EDGE fund.

38 Minute mark   Mentions meeting with Bricker & Eckler …. (The one not recorded to video).  Port authority and anti poaching mentioned – joining a neighboring county.

41.5 Minute mark   Shawnda -…. however you guys can facilitate that because I know you have conversation outside of mine with that project. ***

Commissioner Wesler – Not really (nervous laugh)

Shawnda – there should be. Shawnda does not realize that Dave already has one Sunshine Law violation.

42 Minute mark    Shawnda – There is a lot of misinformation in the community. Obviously the election drives a lot of that.  Mention of 2005 and Governor Strickland.

44.1 Minute mark    Shawnda – What you have on that sheet in front of you is what is available. Interesting as I have a standing request for information Shawnda presents at these meetings with the commissioners and I have not received anything since a few months after I started posting it on this website.

Shawnda mentions talking to many communities about a CRA – Community Redevelopment Agency (involves property abatement)- Lewisburg made use of a CRA to keep This sounds good but last I heard Ms. Combs had yet to meet with Camden offcials and she is approaching two years on the job. I'll say it again – when Ms. Combs holds a  county or regional meeting on these issues the meeting should be recorded to video and put on the Internet. The fact that it has not been done calls into question any right she has to complain about communities not doing something or people not understanding. If the knowledge is available to everyone, including citizens then I would expect pressure to be brought to accomplish some of these goals. Ms. Combs has not done that and this "pity Shawnda" attitude that blames everyone but herself is a negative. <span lang="EN" en;mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="" new="" times="">

47.75 Minute mark    Shawnda goes on to explain a TIF and JEDD, both of which were subjects of the meeting she did not record to video.

Commissioner Stonecash – I think we are all aware of what a TIF and a JEDD is.  That is fine but the public is not aware and Ms. Combs having gone to the time and expense of putting on that meeting short changed the citizens and elected officials by not recording that meeting to video and making it available to everyone at any time.

48.25 Minute mark   David mentions a county TIF. Not county wide – County would be servicer of the bond.

Discussion on issue.
