Commission Objects to Register Herald Stories on JRS & Camden – Budget Hearings

This week has been dominated by the hours of budget hearings for the various county departments. For me though the most memorable meeting will be the one at the end of this day. It had the Preble County Commissioners holding forth wearing their best persecution complex about stories printed in the Register Herald. The first one dealt with the JRS grant application for Goose Creek and was titled wrong. The county has not won the grant; they turned in an application for it. The rest of the story though was almost all quotes and flawless. If the Commission had such a record, the county would have low unemployment and not three guys sitting through two different meetings in the same week listening to people that they employ hope for high unemployment to score points on a grant.

The commissioners main objections came to a second story on Camden see story. I’ll use some of the quoted words of Melissa Shull as my response; “Are you kidding me?”  Seriously, this would be a joke had not the Commissioners been serious. Camden has every right in the world to be upset with the treatment of this Preble County Commission. This commission may not like the Camden story, but you know what? Too bad. On July 11 of this year I attended the Goose Creek informational meeting at National Trail and listened to the Preble County Economic Director claim in front of room full of people that she had visited leaders in every community in the county. She did so while Kelly Doran was at the opposite podium and he told her that he was on Camden council and had never seen her at a Camden Council meeting. She back tracked on her claim. It should have been apparent then to all three commissioners present that a visit to Camden was in order. It is now mid November and it has not happened, instead the Preble Economic Development Director has spent time helping with the Commission Charity Ball, she has hoped for high unemployment in the county to score more points on a JRS grant application for Goose Creek and this commission is well aware of it.

So cry me a river but I think the Register Herald reporter got the story right. This commission has made visits to the New Paris Chamber, they should have visited Camden long before now.

Appears that the commissioners are upset over Camden story.

2 hr. 7.5 Minute mark   Commissioner Stonecash – We would like for the truth to be told. There isn't anything in that article that is true.

Unknown – I'd say 90% of that story is direct quotes.

Commissioner Stonecash – But that doesn't make it right and the public believes those stories. There should be something that ahh I know you are there to sell stories but. Sometimes the truth needs to be told.

Commissioner Wesler – On West Elkton sewer plants.

Commissioner Day offers his views on article.

Commissioner Wesler – On reference to inequity in local government funds.

2 hr. 13.4 Minute mark  Commissioner Stonecash – You know what the problem is and don't quote this. I can go out here and say anything I want and it's just not it's got to tell the truth somewhere along the line. It's unfortunate that he did that.

You know as I said, it is up to the each entity because those when it comes expsecially the environmental issues and things those are those are the responsibility of that community. And ahhm unless we were asked to help in my opinion you would be over stepping your boundaries.

Commissioner Stonecash – We did have conversations with Mayor Gunter. Now we are aware

Unknown – But that's been three Mayors ago.
