PAM STRICKLER W/ REGIONAL STEM COLLABORATIVE – UPDATE ON REGIONAL STEM PROGRAM

Ohio STEM Learning Network (Science – Technology – Engineering – Math)

Worth a listen.

As she starts Pam appears to be reading from a prepared text explaining what they do. Same geographic region as the Dayton Development Coalition.

….Claims to not be here asking for money….

6.25 Minute mark   …aligns with the benchmarks of the state and Common Core…  (Common Core is probably not the best reference to tie into locally).

7 Minute mark   Have teachers intern in industry for a week or two on summer break as a way to have teachers be able to explain how STEM studies can relate to the ability of having a good paying job in the future. Essentially a local tie into industry that can see what jobs are available, will be aviailable and how local curriculums can prepare students for productive jobs. STEM Board members are expected to be active.

This audio file is worth a listen for a better understanding as this is becoming at least a regional if not a national push.

14.5 Minute mark   Mentions Wright Patterson involvement.

16 Minute mark    Mention of code.org.

18 Minute mark   Involvement of area county commissioners or their economic development director mentioned.

19 Minute mark    Area Universities & Community College involvement.

Mentions Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) – internships.

22 Minute mark   Would like Preble County to be part of this effort. Would also like a contact person until Economic Development Director starts in January.  Commissioner Denise Robertson will be contact person until then and be involved even after that.
