Jacob’s Ladder – HIT Foundation – Children Services Monthly Meeting

There are three issues at this meeting that are all at least partly a reflection of a lack of good jobs in this county.  First we have the Jacob’s Ladder Program meeting and the issues of how many children qualify for free or reduced lunch at local schools.  The numbers are troubling and this group strives to send home food with Kindergarten through Sixth grade students that fall into this category or many would not have little to nothing to eat on weekends. Second is the HIT Foundation meeting on grants to help low income residents. Third was the Children Services Monthly Meeting.

All three issues would be greatly helped by more intelligent decision making by Preble County Commissioners.  Quite simply, once again the decision to send a leachate line to Lakengren is short sighted.  Sending the leachate south along Rt.127 to Camden creates the possibility of industry locating in what has been called by many the prime area for industrial development in the county.  Jobs are what is needed to address a multitude of issues with the same core problem; Lack of income, lack of good paying jobs. Those jobs have little to no possibility of being created along the rural route to Lakengren.

Also at issue is the continued discussion of raising the landfill assessment on the citizens of Preble County.  The residents of Preble County as a whole should not be subsidizing the sewer rates of the private community of Lakengren.  The $1,500,000 for the project was applied for with Camden named as the destination.  This would not be a hand out to Camden this would be an attempt to create industrial growth in an area with Railroad, Highway frontage and other infrastructure close at hand for it. None of which is possible with the Lakengren route.

The Preble County Landfill leachate line should go to Camden. The Preble County Commissioners were elected to serve all the residents of Preble County and it is time they at least create the opportunity that the Camden route would open up.

9:00 A.M. – JENNIFER HONAKER (JACOB’S LADDER PROGRAM)

8.5 minute mark     Started last year. Food program for school students below poverty level. This program sends food home with kids so they have something to eat over the weekend. Food is sent home in a backpack. Backpacks are provided if student needs it.

Last year it served 119 students a week in Eaton Kindergarten through sixth grade.

This year all the elementary schools in county will be covered.

13 minute mark     At National Trail the total was 322 students out of 581 that qualified for free and reduced lunch. About 60% of the 322 will probably be targeted for the program. Homeroom teachers involved and at National Trail about 55% of the students.

Preble Shawnee about 49% of students are free and reduced lunch, also a large number.

Twin Valley the number is 38% free or reduced lunch..

Tri County North – 42% free or reduced lunch.

Eaton Community Schools – 42% free or reduced lunch.

15 minute mark     Stories of children asking if their food is here yet.  This is a sad situation.

Food meets national nutrition standards.

Larger building needed.

16 minute mark     Have received a few grants but mostly private donations. Last year was funded by private donations only.

Sponsorships $10 a month.

Not uncommon for the food to be shared to feed the rest of the family.

20 minute mark     Hamilton County numbers higher. Suspected that some local students are not identified and do not want to be seen using free or reduced lunch.

22 minute mark     Trying to reach out to students with nutrition information as there can be issue with parents not listening.

23 minute mark     Attempt to build relationships with families.

LETTER TO COUNTY ELECTED OFFICIALS AND EMPLOYEES ON HEALTH INSURANCE

Commissioner Stonecash – "I have a letter here from the Preble County Board of Commissioners to all elected officials and county employees. Reference county health insurance renewal dates. As you know all health insurance benefits in the past have had a renewal date of October 1, of each year. During last year's renewal period the board awarded a health insurance plan to United Health Care with a 15 month rate guarantee which would change our renewal date of each year to January 1. With that being said dental coverage which is not with United Health Care but rather with Dental Care Plus has a renewal date of 10/01/2010. In order to maintain a uniform renewal date for all insurance benefits the Board of Preble County Commissioners has amended the renewal date for dental coverage to January 1, 2011. We are in the process of reviewing the proposals for all health insurance benefits effective January 1, 2011, at this time. We along with Preble County Health Insurance Advisory Board will be working diligently to get the best rates that we can for all the health insurance benefits offered to Preble County employees."
