Commission Will Note Repeal Tepee Tax – General Fund at All Time High of $3,756,711.45

Public comments contain my visit regarding Bob’s comments last week on the CVB. I also advocated the repeal of the County 3% “tepee tax”, as the bed tax stands now the three commissioners have also endorsed a tax on kids staying in tepees at church camp.  Israel and Jefferson Township and New Paris do not fall under the county control with regard to the tax. It was clear my asking for the commission to repeal the tax fell on deaf ears.

The JFS & Children Services update covered the high cost of placement of children and plans to address the issue. One hundred people have taken the Work Keys assessment and 5872 people in the county received food assistance last month. Becky asked that the commission revisit the accumulation of vacation time as it negatively impacts the department when the total hours accumulated become high. The department can go weeks without a new person in a position as it budget must take into account the hours accumulated.  A recent retire had 479 hours accumulated and it will take six weeks to pay for it. It was reported that three years can be carried by law.

The Budget Commission meeting had Mindy put the cash balance of the General Fund at what is probably an all time high of $3,756,711.45. This would be an ideal time to install a video camera in chambers and start recording commission meetings. If the commission truly wants the citizens to be educated on issues then provide video of the meetings.

The day closed with Lee Richardson in to discuss a Vicious Dog Law that may be enacted and the effect it will have. A hearing would be required to declare a dog vicious.
