Shawnda Combs Retracts Statement on Partnership Tourism Involvement.

Alright, before I get emails; some of you are going to be wondering what did Shawnda Combs the Preble County Economic Development Director do that required her to walk across the street for “clarification” err apologize on the record at 9:00 a.m. on a Monday morning. Shawnda Combs claim that the “tourism initiative” of the Preble County Development Partnership was responsible for the effort to get a National Conference to come to Preble County in 2014 was false.

Congratulations are due Jane Marshall, Rachel Vonderharr, Lavon Wright, the Hueston Region CVB and the staff at Hueston Woods.

Shawnda was called on her claims by those individuals that were responsible and should have been given credit for their efforts, not Shawnda Combs, not the Preble County Development Partnership and not their tourism initiative.

Note to the Preble County Development Partnership; take a look at my post from April 7, 2013 on verification of claims.  This is something that did not have to happen but yet on April 10 it did with the camera recording.  The most often repeated comment at that meeting was “constructive” involvement.  Scroll over to the 24.50 minute mark she was rude and the incident could have been avoided had she listened to me when I said “Whoa” more than once.  The suggestion to use Hueston Woods for the convention was mine and clearly the Partnership and Shawnda do not consult me. I was in a phone conversation with Jane Marshall when she announced the convention and that her and Rachel would be looking for a site to hold it. Jane mentioned hoping for somewhere close that she could drive to from home. I recall her mentioning Dayton & Cinci and I asked; what about Hueston Woods. Jane, Rachel, Lavon and the Hueston Woods CVB ran with it.

Here is my transcription of the commission audio of the comments that necessitated her to come in:

Shawnda Combs – That was something that came out in that meeting was that example the "Women in Ag Conference" is going to be held in Hueston Woods in 2014 and a result of our tourism initiative. Which is phenomenal this is what we need to happen.

Jeff Golden – Whoa Whoa – the CVB and Tourism initiative had nothing to do with that. I know where that came from.

Shawnda Combs – That's great ok I am going to finish my report.

Ah that they it happened here I met with quite a few people that are involved with getting that here. Which is great and I am glad we have people now thinking about holding conventions in Preble County. There will be a couple hundred women at this conference; they'll bring their children and their family which is phenomenal. But what they do when they come to this conference; not only do they stay for a couple days; they want to eat all locally grown foods. So therefore the people that have to organize this conference have to find people in our area that grow foods that are seasonal that can be produced and harvested at that time. To service these hundreds of people. So you are going to see a whole lot of local businesses producing more goods just for that one particular conference. Which means they're going to hopefully producing more goods, they may have to hire a person or two to get it to that point.  They may have to change their business plan a little bit to be able to do this again. It may get more spin off by them being a partner getting coverage in those conference in terms of ahm say Morning Sun their eggs for provided to this conference for them to be promoted I don't know if their eggs are served in Yellow Springs and all the menus at those restaurants that Preble County company. Hopefully we'll see that more often as a result of this plan.

But that Conference is a good example of these people that are working to organize it don't know who produces what and where.  And there are other entities in the county that you would think at this time and community that there would be some sort of resource list of who's doing what. In terms of production of locally grown produce. So hopefully that we will get to that point but in that meeting that came up. That so and so needs a list of locally grown produce so therefore everybody in that room says I do this this and this and I know this person that does this. So now that person has a network of people to work with to make sure that we if we don't grow it here locally in Preble County that we are working with our neighbors. Cause once you start producing – once you create that that demand – you have to supply that demand and hopefully they both grow consistently. If you can't supply what is demanded it is going to hurt all of us. So we need to make sure that it is a methodical thought out process when we think about the agri businesses growing and producing and people going into business in these niche markets.

We have five egg producers that's ok; we just have to figure out how all five of those egg producers are selling their eggs. Not just in Preble County but all over.

Jeff Golden  I think there is a misconception here. I think we need a list of local producers and stuff and what they produce. But that convention is going to be in November so if we are thinking fresh fruits and vegetables we're not thinking the right thing here.

Shawnda Combs – There's – people eat more than fruits and vegetables there’s needs.

Jeff Golden – I know but when you say all fresh produce – I am just telling you that in November – 14th or whatever you are not going to find a whole lot of that in Preble County.

Shawnda Combs – Great

Jeff Golden – The eggs – I agree with I think anytime of the year you need a list like that. I agree with you on that but when you say stuff like that –  all fresh produce locally grown – it isn't there in November.

Shawnda Combs – But there are farms for example Today ahh Boulder Belt up here. They're learning to grow produce year round so there's just different that great but they're learning new technology to be able to grow their products year round. That's where we want to see growth and entrepreneurism in agri business. I s they need to learn how to do certain things year round. Whether it’s taking a different hoop? or cover or whatever.  We want to help them to learn what it takes to grow year round. And they Boulder Belt is doing a phenomenal job of them doing that. We want to see them to continue to that.

At the end of the day there is going to be a list and I think it is going to be helpful to the entire community. Economic development and the Ag community. But anyways, it is a good thing and I appreciate your input.

Denise Robertson – Are you done?

V. PUBLIC COMMENTS

Shawnda Combs

I would like to make a clarification for the record. Some people might think that I tried to take credit for the American Agri Women having their 2014 conference in Preble County and that was not my intent. I would like to make a correction of the record from April 10, 2013 Ohio Agri Women will be hosting the American Agri Women's National Convention November 6 – 8, 2014 at Hueston Woods State Lodge in Israel Township. Anyone interested more information may contact Jane Marshall or Rachel Vonderharr the current President and Vice President of Ohio Agri Women by the way of their website at www.ohioagriwomen.com. Thank you.
