1:00 p.m. Special Pubilc Meeting On Increasing the License Plate Tax.

The Preble County Commissioners voted "no" in a 2 – 1 vote on the first of three resolutions which effectively killed this tax at the county level. Commissioners Stonecash and Wesler voted “no”, Commissioner Day voted "yes".

To the citizens of Preble County that took the time to attend and speakout at these meetings, thank you for getting involved.

This well attended second and final public hearing had some in the audience that had also attended the Monday meeting as well some first time attendees. The large majority spoke against these taxes or asked that the public be given the chance to vote on raising taxes. The only person giving what might be considered an endorsement lives in West Alexandria and is a member of the Preble County Development Partnership. The Partnership President had attended a previous commission meeting with the Preble County Economic Development Director and informed the commissioners that the Preble County Development Partnership would be endorsing both this tax and a proposed and uncompetitive "bed tax" that would put local lodging at a marketing disadvantage to both Oxford and Richmond.

It is troubling and unfortunate that endorsing the raising of taxes on Preble County residents has become the hallmark of the Preble Development Partnership.

The first part of this meeting was essentially the same presentation that had previously been posted for the April 18, 2011 meeting, that link will also make available the PowerPoint presentation for review that was used today.

It is now time that the leadership of Eaton, Lewisburg and West Alexandria rescind their votes that raised taxes on their citizens. These votes were held in rapid succession and made with the claim that “they were only doing it to beat the county”. These taxes go to the first political entity to level them and the thought was that this would keep the money in those communities. Now that the Commission has voted down this tax so should the leadership of Eaton, Lewisburg and West Alexandria. If that leadership does not rescind their votes that raised taxes on poor, elderly and fixed income citizens then the people of those communities should hold them accountable at the next election, if not sooner.

Coincidently the Preble County Partnership is primarily represented by a membership that lives in the area of three communities that leveled the taxes. There is zero membership representation from the western half of Preble County. This area includes Camden in the south to New Paris and the Darke County line in the north.
