City of Eaton – Anonymous Donor Offers to Build Million Dollar Softball Complex if County Donates Land

File 2 has the commission being notified by Children’s Services of an expected cash shortfall early in 2014. A figure of $118,000 to cover that shortfall is mentioned as property taxes disbursement will not come in until March. Also covered in this meeting was Preble County ranking at the second highest level for opiate detection in pregnant mothers. Some of that could be tied to prescribed drugs but my thought is that same argument could also be applied to other areas of the state that scored lower.

File 4 had Mayor Wagner and Brad Collins into request that the commission consider gifting some ground for a top notch soft ball facility. Two areas were mentioned; the first is about 20 acres close to Van Crest and the current soccer fields and the second is acreage on Camden Rd. over by Ft St. Clair and adjacent to the new Eaton Schools facility.

The need is for 17 – 20 acres of land that would house four softball fields, rest rooms and concessions. The whole facility is to be very well done – first class.  There is a donor who has committed a figure that sounded like a million dollars (listen to the audio) to the project. This would be a county wide facility but the City of Eaton would handle maintenance. This facility is envisioned as attracting tournaments. Commissioner Wesler wondered where they would stay – Hueston Woods.  Luckily someone mentioned the Fairfield Inn and Golden Inn.  Dave has long wanted a new hotel built in Eaton.  The thing is that if there were enough lodging room nights available in Eaton a hotel would have been built by now. More events that would provide demand are needed and this could be one very good way of providing additional demand. Another would be more focus on the Fairgrounds as a means to do so. There was no name of the donor mentioned but there was some consideration of going into executive session to discuss the topic. The Commission did not do so as Denise Robertson was absent but will probably do so in the near future.  The Mayor stated the hope is that the project will be “moved on” by spring 2014.

The commission has previously set the precedent of gifting property for economic development purposes and the caliber of this proposed facility should have it considered an economic development tool.  Someone is willing to put up the money to build it and that does not happen in every community.  It is not the complete economic development answer but it could be one more reason for people to visit Preble County and spend money here.

An obvious commission question might be; is there a tournament or tournaments that this facility may already be expected to attract once it is built or does the search for tournaments begin after it is built? Someone has made an extremely generous offer and the city seems ready to go and agreeable to picking up the maintenance. This happened on a day when Children’s Services hit them up for another unexpected $118,000 so the commission could think of selling land instead of giving it away.
