Children’s Services Requests an Additional $90,000 as Drug Epidemic Costs Rise – Brenda Latanza Named new Economic Development Director

This meeting has a request for an additional $90,000 for child care expenses for this year and a warning that the request could grow larger.  As related here these costs are a direct result of the drug epidemic and an example is that in the last two weeks two newborns have come in to the system because of apparently testing positive on drug tests given at birth.

Two items on the economic development front:

1.      Has the commission sending a letter of support involving the Warren County Port Authority and Henny Penny. The Port Authority agreement may be the best thing to  happen under the previous ED director.

2.      Jim Simon announced the new Economic Director will be Brenda Latanza of Sinclair Community College. She does not live in the county but Jim noted she does not live far from Preble.

It is my hope that the new economic development director proves to be less controversial and adversarial than I found the last one. It is my understanding that there was a very good candidate that lives in county and while I do not hold that against the new candidate – I will remember the Partnership had the chance going forward. While there has been some good come out of Partnership efforts there have been plenty of self inflicted issues that should not be forgotten. The group was part of Goose Creek or took no active role against it and sat silent on the leachate line to Camden. Those issues and a number of others should not be forgotten in the positive press barrage that will be coming soon to continue the $100,000 in-kind county contribution that was to end after what will soon be the fifth year. The Partnership was to be self sufficient under the original agreement and it won't be.  I am for continuing county involvement but I also believe they need to start living by their commitments and stop sitting quietly on issues like Goose Creek.
